Moral Orthopedics: A Foucauldian Account of Schooling as Discipline

Introduction

Michel Foucault seldom gave direct and concerted attention to the field of education, and yet education is often mentioned, implied or indirectly discussed in his corpus.1 Comprehensively drawing together, from across his entire oeuvre of books, articles and interviews, all Foucault's references to education, this article contributes to the exploration and analysis of the establishment and mechanics of schooling as a society-wide disciplinary technology.2 Central to such a Foucauldian account is an examination of the development of new educational methodologies and relays of power and knowledge through which individual and collective subjects could be managed, their context regulated, their...
