Introduction

Russell Berman

Paul Piccone, founder and long-time editor of Telos, died on July 12 after a four-year struggle with cancer. A man of extraordinary vitality, intellectual energy, and personal charisma, Piccone made a unique contribution to American culture and, especially, the transformation of the left through an unencumbered exploration of the world of ideas. In particular, through his journal, Piccone significantly influenced the reception of European philosophy and social theory in the United States.

Born in L'Aquila in Abruzzo on January 17, 1940, Piccone left Italy at the age of fourteen to settle with his family in Rochester, in upstate New York....
