How is it that despite posting, year after year, the worst approval ratings of any major French politician, Jean-Marie Le Pen appears to be getting stronger, not weaker? The last survey conducted by TNS Sofres in late November 2003, entitled "The French and the Front National," did not significantly deviate from a pattern well-known to students of the Far Right in France. To the question regarding how the positions Le Pen took on major issues should be judged, 84% of respondents considered them either "excessive" (42%) or "unacceptable" (42%).
