On June 26, 1965, Julien Freund defended his thesis on "The Essence of Politics" at the Sorbonne. In addition to his advisor, the examining committee included Raymond Aron,2 the philosophers Paul Ricoeur, Jean Hyppolite, and Raymond Polin, as well as Pierre Grappin, who was at the time the dean of the newly-founded University of Nanterre-la-Folie. Born on January 9, 1921 in Henridorff (Moselle), Freund had just turned 44 when he defended his dissertation in philosophy,3 on which he had been working since 1949, when he completed his degree in education.
