On The Postmodern Nomos

In the opening pages of The Nomos of the Earth, Carl Schmitt, having designated "appropriation" as the founding act of an order and the possibility of domination not only over the land, but also (even if profoundly different) over the sea, and the relation between the two, claims that both types of appropriation have been transformed fundamentally: "Today, as a result of a new spatial phenomenon—the possibility of a domination of airspace—firm land and free sea alike are being altered drastically, both in and of themselves and in relation to each other.
