Understanding Conservatism and Tradition

To understand conservatism it is essential to understand how conservatives differ from leftists and libertarians. Basic oppositions in politics are usually concerned with fundamental issues of social organization. Who will be supreme: king or parliament, pope or emperor, local community, nation, or transnational bureaucracy? Such issues are as important now as they were for the Cavaliers and the Roundheads. So a simple explanation for the major divisions in political thought today is concerned with differing ideas of how society should be organized. Each way of running things creates a party that favors it.
