Few events are significant enough to mark a historical divide, and when they occur, it usually takes a while to realize their implications. The Sept. 11 attack is one such event, whose full impact so far has been experienced mostly as a spectacle, and whose meaning remains unclear. This is why this issue includes another section dealing with typical responses, now mostly from Europeans. There are lessons to be learned, but as yet it is not obvious what they are—and whatever may have been learned so far has already been mainstreamed into pre-Sept. 11 conventional wisdom.
