Russia—A Society in Transition?

It has been over 10 years since the dissolution of USSR and the collapse of the Soviet system. This anniversary is not so much a pretext for celebration, but an opportunity to evaluate Russia's post-Soviet development. The main question is how far the country has come from totalitarianism. Is it possible to talk about internal factors precipitating the radical transformation of totalitarian regimes, as if they were so stable that their collapse could only result from external pressure or military defeat? There are no guidelines for transforming totalitarian societies into something close to those with democratic systems and market economies....
