Every age has its hierarchy of crimes, and the present one is no exception. Today, "racism" must be at the top of the list, or very close to it, even though only a few generations ago it may hardly have made an appearance. Does this mean there was no racism then? Is it a case of sudden enlightenment? Or could this dubious distinction be symptomatic of something else? To accommodate this alleged new sensibility, an altogether new category of crimes has been created: "hate crimes," whose imputed despicableness now competes with that of the worst expressions of evil. Regardless...
